Last night was easy. She told me. It took the guesswork out of trying to figure out what she was feeling. But she didn’t tell me with her words. She didn’t “use her voice.” Her body told me. She was either cold or she was scared. Frankly, it could have been either, but since we were under a tornado watch and the wind was blowing madly through the tops of the trees and it was beginning to rain, her body was shaking like one of the leaves outside, it was easy for me to tell that she was scared.
Understanding what my kids are experiencing is not always that simple or easy. I don’t always know what they are feeling. In fact I don’t know what my kids are experiencing internally unless they tell me.
