When grandparents become the parents

You didn't ask for things to be this way. Because you care, you are doing what needs to be done anyway.

When parents are unable to care for their children, grandparents often step up and fill in the role of parent. Addiction. Prison. Death. Lack of resources. There are multiple ways parents find themselves unable to care for their children. Grandparents may themselves taking over the responsibility their own children are unable to fulfill. Yet, many grandparents experience complexities other parents don't, not to mention mixed emotions, such as grief, shame, embarrassment, disappointment, and insecurity that may complicate and contradict the feelings of joy that come with grandchildren.
